Pfizer's blockbuster prescription drug Viagra has been nicknamed the "Pfizer drug of the year" by its competitors and the generic version is the most successful drug in history, the company said Monday.
The data, which includes sales data from sales of Pfizer drugs, includes Viagra's U. S. total sales and overall product sales in the United States, as well as worldwide sales of the brand-name drug from the manufacturer, Eli Lilly.
Viagra, launched in 1998, is the company's most successful product. It sold about $3 billion in Pfizer sales in 2007. In the same period, it had sales of $1.1 billion. Viagra has been the most successful drug in history.
The U. sales of Viagra account for about 10 percent of all Pfizer's total sales, and Lilly and Pfizer's U. share price in the United States is expected to grow to a compound annual growth rate of about 10 percent by year's end.
Pfizer Inc., a biotechnology company that has been involved in the research and development of drugs for more than 25 years, said Monday it has received worldwide approval for marketing of its products in the United States.
"This is a very important milestone for us, and it's a very important milestone for Pfizer," said Jim Sage, Pfizer's executive vice president of global product marketing. "We are very pleased with the sales of Viagra today and excited to work with the company to develop the most effective product to date for Viagra."
Eli Lilly is already marketing its U. product Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It will be marketed in the United States and Europe and is expected to hit sales in 2005. Lilly said it has received FDA approval for Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, but its U. patent expires in 2007.
The company said Monday it has received approval from the FDA for marketing Viagra to treat impotence in adults. It is also marketing a drug to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, that happens when the prostate gland gets too weak to produce urine.
The company also is developing the first oral medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, called Provera, in 2006. It will be sold by Sanofi, which is developing a new treatment for the disorder. Pfizer has said the drug will have a positive effect on erectile dysfunction and is expected to generate sales of $3 billion for the company in the United States.
Viagra has been the most successful product in history, generating $3.5 billion in sales worldwide. Pfizer's U. sales for the first six years of Viagra's existence were $1.5 billion. In 2007, it generated $1.7 billion worldwide.
Eli Lilly said Monday that it had received FDA approval for marketing Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction in adults.
